The tramp stamp tattoo

In the early 1990s, a new tattoo style began to pop up on beaches and in night clubs all over the world. “tramp stamps”, as they’d come to be known, are tattoos that can be found on the lower back area of a woman. These controversial and risqué tattoos have since drawn strong criticism from some, while garnering praise from others.

Why did “tramp stamps” come about?
The lower back area is a popular area for tattoos because the wide area offers quite a canvas for tattoo artists. There, women can get a large tattoo that stretches horizontally and sends a message. “tramp stamps” in this area of the body are popular because they don’t tend to lose their shape when the body goes through certain weight changes.

Is it a fading trend?
The tramp stamp seems like it’s here to stay, at least for now. In the early 1990s, there was a great deal of negative sentiment associated with this type of tattoo. These days, with the help of movies like Wedding Crashers and comments from people like HBO’s Bill Maher, tribal tattoos on the lower back are seen as something that’s hip and sexy. Like most trends, this one will probably run its course eventually, though.

White trash?
Tattoos themselves have long been a sign of trashiness. White women have been especially fond of using an ill-placed tattoo to show their social standing. The tramp stamp, on the other hand, seems to be a tattoo that suggests a woman’s penchant for sex over any sort of designation of white trash status. On the right woman, the slut mark is a sexy look. Put it on the wrong lower back, though, and it still suggests white trash.

What kind of statement are you making?
The tramp stamp carries with it a large amount of sexual innuendo. As Jeremy Gray said in Wedding Crashers, “See that tattoo on the lower back? It might as well be a bull’s eye.” When you go to the beach showing off your lower back tribal mark, you are inviting guys to make suggestions and assumptions about your late night activities. As long as you’re ok with being thought a hoe, wearing a tramp stamp shouldn’t bother you.

"As long as you’re ok with being thought a hoe, …"

"Hoe" is a garden implement, you fool. You mean "ho", not "hoe".

Moron! What makes a tramp is actions and not tattoos. So if a rich girl gets one, she's hot and a poor one does, she's white trash? What about a rich black girl? A poor asian? Egads. These are not tramp stamps, putting them on display in a night club in order to attract attention from men in order to get laid is the true tramp stamp. The same for straight girls that kiss and grind on other girls in a night club for the same reason. The location is actually pretty good because it can be covered by clothing. Then it can be something sexy for a woman and her lover/spouse or for attention if that's what she wants. But rarely is a tattoo done on a man or a woman that they don't want to show it off in some way. What makes this an easy target is that the location is considered very sexy by itself and the tattoo adds an element of the taboo. It's idiot guys who think wow this chick has stamp that certifies she'll be easier to have sex with that leads to the stereotype. Basically this guy finds it a turn on and it alarms him so resorts to the age old weapon men have used for thousands of years. Trying to control women's sexuality through negative labeling. How pathetic.

"Slut mark" rather than "tramp stamp" ? You fail. How about "ass antlers" when in the company of trollops.

Haha you lot are funny use even argue about something you cannot change the worlds changing people are changing you can't stop something that's just starting like when you smoke or drink or read or sleep you need it to make you who you are today don't mean your a ho or slut just a trend to make you who you are or to find who you are don't mean anything in bad yeah may get guys attention though in all that doesn't it make you feel good that people are looking at the design need stop being negative and be positive! Remember Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truely, laugh uncontrollaby and never regret anything you got one life so make the most of it try everything once we are only humans in the end and we all make mistakes!
